A level tutoring costs

A-level exams are critical to getting admission into top UK universities. 17-- to 18-year-olds typically take these exams, which involve taking on 3 or 4 core subjects. For many students, the benefit of one-to-one tutoring cannot be overstated. This includes faster progress, improved confidence, and better grades. But a common question is, how much is reasonable to pay for a tutor?

Quality Costs

Like in any industry, quality costs more. Some tutors charge £15 an hour. These are normally younger individuals with little to no experience. They likely know the material well, but they may lack the ability to communicate this clearly.

On the other hand, some tutors charge up to £100 an hour. At this level, expect a tutor who has graduated from top universities (think Oxbridge, UCL, LSE, etc) and has many years of experience under their belt. On the first call, they will be able to demonstrate that they are confident in the subject and show they are excellent communicators

The Degree Gap aims to strike a balance between the two. We understand that price matters, and we never look to charge an unreasonable price. We price our tutors on an individual basis based on their quality and experience. If a tutor is priced higher on our platform, it is for good reason.

Range of Prices for A-level Tutors in the UK

In summary the prices for a reasonable tutor are likely:
  •  Lower End: £25-£40 per hour
  •  Middle Range: £40-£50 per hour
  •  Higher End: £50 per hour or more
Tutors may offer discounts for block bookings or long-term arrangements.

A-Level Tutor Prices in the UK (Average by Subject)

Some subjects are more challenging so require tutors to be paid a higher rate to compensate for this. Here is how I would break down the average rates by subject:

Subject  Average Price per hour  Notes
Maths  40-70  Very popular and wide range
of experience
English  35-50  Varies lot based on experience
 Geography  35-45
Physics  40-60  Demanding subject so paid more
Economics  40-60  Hard subject to teach so paid more
 Business Studies  30-40

The general consensus is that the harder the subject, the higher the average rate. This is because the tutor will likely need to prepare for the call.

Factors Affecting the Cost of A-level Tutoring

Several factors can influence the cost of A-level tutoring:
  • Tutor’s Qualifications and Experience: As mentioned, people with more experience charge a higher rate. A teacher with a PhD in Mathematics will not charge the same as an A-level student for GCSE tutoring. Expect to pay 70+ an hour for the PhD teacher.
  •  Location: London seems to be the most expensive place for face-to-face tutoring. This is likely because of the higher cost of living and transport in London. The benefit of online tutoring is that it does not matter.
  •  Subject: Subjects perceived as more challenging, like math and science, usually have higher fees. For example, an A-level physics tutor might charge £60 per hour, while an English literature tutor might charge £40.
